In a recent interview, director Mani Ratnam has expressed his apology to the audiences who felt that Thug Life did not meet their expectations. “For the audiences who expected another Nayakan, we are sorry. It was never our intention to go back, why should we? We wanted to do something entirely different. I think more than over expectation, it was another expectation. The audience expected something far removed from what we delivered” he said.

Thug Life was billed as one of the biggies of the year with massive expectations, but the film did not bring what the audiences wanted and turned out up to be a damp squib at the box office. Kamal Haasan is now working on his next film which is said to be with Anbariv masters, while Mani Ratnam is set work on a love story next.
