Packed with family emotions, lessons on farming and a handful of masala ingredients, Kadaikutty Singam is a good family entertainer that hits the right notes in terms of the relationships displayed. The film has Karthi in great form, being himself in his comfort zone which is the rural range. Pandiraj’s strength – his dialogues come into good effect here.
Few minutes into the film, and Sathyaraj tells us that he wants to see his family together and take a photograph with them. That explains the context of Kadaikutty Singam, where family is kept at the centre stage with the other elements around it being secondary. While the first half moves at a solid pace with lots of fun and fights too, the second half is more of an emotional drama involving the entire starcast.
Kudos to Karthi for doing this film with so many artists, avoiding thoughts of being overshadowed. He looks great in a veshti-sattai, and performs his scenes with elan as if he’s been practicing it for years. His growth as an actor is definitely visible. Sayyeshaa, in just her second film, gets to play a village belle and does it off with cute expressions. On the other hand, one feels the need for a better written part for Priya Bhavani Shankar, who fits the role of a village belle well. Soori has a good day out with a nice share of emotional sequences too, while Sathyaraj’s role is a cakewalk for the actor.
Cinematographer Velraj captures the colors of the village sides beautifully, while Imman’s music adds value to the film – especially the Kaalai theme and the Vaa Jikki number.
Toting up, Kadaikutty Singam is a near-complete family film with a heavy dose of emotional space. If and well this connects with the family audience, it’s a smooth road ahead for Karthi, Pandiraj and team.
