We’ve got used to Vijay’s films now. Atleast some of us. We know what to expect when he’s there, the storyline is mostly predictable, and the villains are stereotyped. But even after all these roadblocks and more, Vijay’s superpower seems to be in adding an incessant charm to an everyday entertainer, and zoom up the excitement. Bairavaa in hindsight, is one more example to this list.

When Bharathan gets another chance to prove his mettle, he doesn’t experiment much barring the small surprises here and there. 9 times out of 10, the next scene is predictable and you know where he is getting. But what I liked here are his sharp dialogues which are sure to bring up the claps amongst the mass audiences. Amidst the comic lines and the usual commercial track, he fits in some debatable social elements with respect to the central theme. His first half is definitely superior to the second, but there are a slew of amazing mass moments throughout worth screaming your throat out. The combination of Vijay, Sukumar’s camerawork, Anl Arasu’s stunts and Santosh Narayanan’s theme result in superb action blocks which are easily the best thing about the film.

Bairavaa is doubtlessly an out-and-out Vijay show, and it’s unimaginable how empty the film would have been without him. Almost every alternate scene celebrates the star in good fashion, while the rest of the cast (including the heroine who has a meaty role) just act as sidekicks aiding him through.

On the flipside, the film should have been 20 minutes shorter with better songs. Silly comedy scenes in the second half bring in the lag, which could have been avoided to deliver a complete film.

Toting up, Bairavaa won’t give you anything out-of-the-box or never seen before, but it’s Vijay who makes it special and churns out a fairly pleasing commercial entertainer. No strings attached, watch and walk off.
